Agree to Disagree

In Uncategorized on April 17, 2009 at 2:59 pm

There are multiple solutions to any given problem, all of which have their own pros and cons. When you have a strong opinion about why one solution is better than other and it is a subjective opinion, it is essential to evaluate it without bias & then articulate it well to the stakeholders. As always, place huge importance on execution to successfully resolve the issue.

Once in a while you may find yourself disagreeing with your stakeholder or boss. This is inevitable when you have smart & opinionated people. We need both of these attributes in the workplace to get things done. Otherwise, everyone waits for someone to tell them what to do & nothing gets done. Any group needs a leader. Even the highest of the person in the chain of command reports to someone else. For instance, a CEO reports to a board who in turn is answerable to the shareholders.

What do you do when your opinion differs from your boss’s? Hopefully this is not an everyday occurrence. If it is, then it is time for a new job. But if it happens very rarely and you are not able to reach an agreement, you can politely agree to disagree & have a different opinion on that particular topic. Before you do this, you’ve to ensure that your manager is open-minded enough to accept that it is okay to have multiple perspectives.
